Post-Cyclone Gabrielle Survey - Hawkes Bay, NZ

Glider Betty is deployed from NIWA’s RV Ikatere in Hawkes Bay, NZ

Cyclone Gabrielle’s aftermath included rivers flooding and depositing silt and debris laden flows into Hawkes Bay in February 2023. To help NIWA’s study of the cyclone’s impacts we deployed NIWA Glider Betty to measure water physical and chemical properties along a track she had taken in 2019. Data collected include particle size distribution and volume concentration from a LISST (on loan from Rutgers University). Preliminary data indicate silt remained suspended in the water column in May 2023.

My role

Prepare and deploy glider, monitor glider during deployment, data first-look. Train junior pilots.
